Illustrator Homework 1

One tool that seems easy to use from this video is the rectangle tool and the other shapes that are under that tool (polygon, star, etc.). Pressing V selects and object, and holding down shift while resizing it keeps it the uniform. I get confused about the difference between the selection tool and the direct selection tool, but I am familiar with them from some classes I took in high school. Using the pen tool seems easy, and I know how to add and remove anchor points from a line. Clicking and dragging using the pen tool is how to create a curve, while just clicking creates a point for the line to connect. The curvature pen tool looks confusing, but the text tool is very simple.

One tip from this video is turning on smart guides, which helps to organize shapes when trying to space them out evenly, or to align edges perfectly. The ellipse tool under the rectangle tool creates a circle. In the transform panel under the properties panel, you can round the edges of things, which can also be done using the direct selection tool and dragging the circles that appear inside of the shape. Grouping shapes is done by pressing command + G, and to ungroup you press command + shift + G. The caligraphic brush is used to create images that look more like drawings, but this looks difficult for me to use since I am working on a macbook, not a tablet.

The shape builder tool lets you select which shapes you want to group together, which seems easy. This can also help when you are trying to cut out shapes. The color guide tool gives you different options of shades and tints of colors that look good together. The clipping mask tool is also used to select the specific parts you want to be seen in an image. like a cookie cutter. I have never used any of these tools before but I am excited to learn. The keyboard shortcuts that seem the most helpful are the grouping tool (command + G), the selection tool (V), the direct selection tool (A), and the pen tool (P).
